Her Own Truth: Synopsis

Her Own Truth tells the story of Ayla, a young woman who beats depression and learns how to create her own reality. Nova, Nahimana, The Advocate for the Organization of Misrepresented Persons, and Death are characters that represent forces that help to shape the course of Aylas life and allow her to grow and change.

The film opens with Ayla speaking a poem. The audience is never seen, but implied as Ayla looks out into the darkness. This scene is really from the end of the story, which is revealed at the end of the film as Ayla walks up to the microphone under a voice-over of the closing lines.

In the poem, she identifies herself with the God Osiris. In the Egyptian mythological story, Osiris is cut into pieces by Set. The Goddess Isis finds almost all of his pieces, and puts him back together, and Osiris becomes the lord of the Underworld. Aylas story connects with this, in that at the beginning of the story her depression is so severe that she is told she will never recover, and yet she chooses to put her pieces back together and rise up.

Ayla meets what seem like insurmountable odds because she believes it is possible, "They said it was impossible. They said I would never make it given how bad of a state I was in. They were ready to give up... But I got out. I got out the only way I could. I looked fear in the eye and said let me pass..." This really is a journey film, as it not only follows her through her journey in life, but also because she is often walking, moving, and traveling. Her future holds limitless possibilities because she is willing to continue moving foreword, "I'm ready now. More than ever."
